As a poet, Tom strives to write poems that are accessible, open to diverse groups, and engaged with the socio-political-environmental realities of our world. His poems comprise a wide variety of poetic forms, from traditional lyric to spoken word to experimental language. Tom’s commitment to exploring our connection with animals and the natural environment is evident in his 2013 chapbook, What the Badger Said.

Tom has served London as a dedicated volunteer for various literary organizations and initiatives. Tom has been a board member of London’s literary arts festival, “WordsFest”, for which he has worked to create events that unite and showcase London’s artistic community. He is co-publisher and co-editor of the WordsFestZine, a collection of poems written by festival authors and attendees over the course of the three-day festival. Tom also designed and co-coordinated “Guerilla Poetry,” a “WordsFest” event in which participants stood on milk crates on busy street corners and read selections of their original or favourite pieces of writing. Both the Zine and Guerilla Poetry embody Tom’s vision of bringing an array of writers with various styles, ages, and backgrounds together to join in collaborative projects and events.

In addition to his work with WordsFest, Tom works to provide learning opportunities for local poets. He has been a committee member and workshop facilitator for Poetry London’s reading series since 2012. Additionally, he facilitates yearly workshops for Western University’s Language Day, Gathering in the Garden, and the Children’s International Summer Villages Summer Camp, which engages elementary students in environmental conservation through poetic expression.

Tom is also an active promoter of community building and urban renewal. He has served as a board member to Urban League and as a member of the Back to the River Steering Committee. With his partner and six-year-old son, Tom co-founded Thames River Rally, a volunteer organization that coordinates monthly cleanups of the Thames River and encourages partnerships with community organizations to protect and preserve green spaces.
