Lorraine Klaasen
Lorraine Klaasen, the daughter of legendary South African jazz singer Thandie Klaasen, is one of the few artists who have preserved classic Township Music, which continues to be the most distinctive sound to come out of South Africa.
Since immigrating to Canada from Soweto about four decades ago, Lorraine has electrified audiences around the globe with her dynamic stage presence and showmanship. She earned a JUNO-Award for her 2013 “Tribute to Miriam Makeba" CD (Justin Time Records). Klaasen’s latest collaboration is the song “Lesedi” (light), which Lorraine sings in four African Bantu languages. It is part of a new project called Seven Chapters of Mystery by Ngoma Zethu, a Pan African Cultural Revolution featuring seven artists from Africa.
Klaasen, has dedicated her life to uniting people of all races through music and art. One of the highlights of her career was a 2016 tour of the United States in which she performed and led cultural & musical workshops for underserved communities. Shortly after relocating from Montreal to London, Ontario in 2014, Lorraine Klaasen made her TD Sunfest (in the Park) debut, followed by a spring 2018 date at The Aeolian as part of Sunfest’s celebration of London Music Week.
